Churchill is a remote location with no road access. Visitors get to the town by train or airplane.
Calm Air provides flights from Winnipeg while Via Rail runs trains from Winnipeg or Thompson, Manitoba - a town approximately 250 miles from Churchill and the northernmost settlement accessible by car.
Churchill is a northern town so yes, it gets cold. Temperatures will likely be lower than you’re used to so pack warm clothing! Churchill has a subarctic climate, where the average temperature ranges from 18 degrees in summer to minus 30 degrees in winter. July is our hottest month while January is usually the coldest.
Being far north, Churchill has slightly longer days in the summer and shorter in winter. You can expect around 18 hours of daylight in July and 6 hours in December, with the shortest day of the year falling on or around the winter solstice.
The population of Churchill is approximately 900 people year-round but the area welcomes many seasonal guests including birdwatchers, scientists, researchers, tourists, and artists.
Churchill is a small town so most of its amenities are accessible on foot. Be mindful of local wildlife when exploring town however - always follow the posted polar bear warnings/directions and never venture outside the settlement without a guide.
You can fly into Churchill Airport (YYQ) from either Winnipeg (YWG) or Thompson (YTH). Both routes are operated by Calm Air, which flies into Churchill multiple times a week.
Flights from Winnipeg are approximately two hours long. Direct flights from Thompson are around an hour. Bear in mind that travel can be unpredictable in northern areas due to weather conditions, so it’s a good idea to confirm your flight with the airline before departure.
Many visitors to Churchill prefer to take the scenic route - a train that winds north from Winnipeg through the unspoilt wilderness. The journey lasts around 45 hours and is one of Via Rail’s most popular routes.
While the town itself has a small cluster of unpaved roads, Churchill is not accessible by car. You can drive to Thompson, park, and take a plane or train from there. Alternatively, you can drive to Gilliam, a small town located between Churchill and Thompson, and board a train there.
Once you arrive in Churchill, rental cars are available at the Churchill Airport from Tamarack Rentals. Be sure to gas up at O'Connor Services, the only gas station and auto repair shop in Churchill.
Churchill is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. This incredible spectacle can appear any time of year in the skies above the town but it’s most reliably seen during the dark, clear nights of late winter, around February or March.
Churchill is an all-season destination but you can time your visit depending on what you want to see.
The Beluga whales are most active from June to September while polar bear season runs October to November - this is when the bears congregate in groups to wait for the Hudson Bay to freeze and hunting season to begin.
Birders enjoy visiting from late May through to September before the migratory species leave the area for warmer habitats. There’s a flurry of feathered activity around Goose Creek in the spring and summer, cementing its reputation as one of Canada’s most beloved birding hotspots.
For more information on species, birding tips, and locations, visit the Churchill Northern Studies Centre.
